Leadership in Hip and Knee Replacement

Dr. Wind is a subspecialist orthopedic surgeon in Richmond, VA focusing specifically on disorders of the hip and knee.  He is the highest volume hip and knee surgeon in central Virginia.  His focus of specialty is minimally invasive joint replacement surgery for the hip and knee.  The majority of his joint replacement surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) setting.  This involves performing all types of hip and knee replacement procedures with precise technique that allows patients to begin ambulating within 1 hour of surgery.  Most patients are able to walk, climb stairs, and be discharged home within a few hours of surgery.  He serves in many leadership positions within OrthoVirginia and has been integral in helping OrthoVirginia build a thriving outpatient joint replacement surgery program across multiple ASCs.  He currently serves as the medical director at the newly opened state-of-the-art Westchester ASC as well as the President of the OrthoVirginia Central Region.

Common Conditions Treated

Hip and knee disorders encompass a broad range of pathology and can be extremely disabling.  Dr Wind is primarily focused on the treatment of chronic arthritic pain of the hip and knee.  Most patients have had an extended history of joint pain that progressively has grown worse over time.  Arthritic conditions that can affect the hip and knee include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, as well as avascular necrosis.  Dr Wind commonly encounters patients who have congenital or longstanding deformities of the hip and knee.  He also routinely performs second opinions for patients who have seen other providers or who are not satisfied with previous care from other physicians.  When interacting with patients Dr Wind is careful to offer a full variety of treatment options starting with conservative non-operative treatments for joint pain and progressing to surgical options for those patients who may need surgery.

Minimally Invasive Anterior Hip Replacement

With years of experience, Dr Wind is able to offer a full variety of surgical techniques for the treatment of any condition of the hip however he primarily focuses on minimally invasive Anterior Hip Replacement for the vast majority of patients suffering from arthritic hip pain.  Anterior hip replacement surgery is a less invasive approach that does not cut any muscles or tendons.  The surgery is commonly performed on a specialty bed specifically designed for this purpose.  The incision is a small at 4-5 inches and placed on the front of the thigh.  Surgery is performed by going BETWEEN muscles rather than cutting muscles.  Surgery time is typically 45-50 minutes and most patients are able to ambulate within 1-2 hours of surgery and go home later the same day.  Advantages of Anterior Hip Replacement over more traditional methods include less pain, quicker recovery, improved accuracy of implant placement, and less risk of hip dislocation.

Minimally Invasive SubV Knee Replacement

Traditional knee replacement surgery involves the cutting of the quadriceps tendon and surrounding muscle to gain exposure to the knee.  Dr Wind is an expert at performing an alternative less invasive approach which is called the SubV Knee where there is not cutting or the tendon or muscle.  This approach is a completely tendon and muscle sparing technique for knee replacement.  The name “SubV Knee” comes from the anatomic approach for the surgery.  During the surgery the exposure to the knee is gained from going underneath the vastus musculature of the knee which is the “Subvastus approach” to knee replacement that gives the SubV Knee its name.  This subvastus technique results in less pain after surgery, quicker recovery, and improved range of motion of the knee.   Using minimally invasive SubV technique, Dr Wind is able to perform the majority of his knee replacement surgeries outpatient in the ASC setting with patients able to be comfortable going home within a few hours of surgery.
