SubV Knee explained

Over the last several months we have had increasing numbers of patients who are considering knee replacement surgery asking about the SubV Knee.  This procedure is a minimally invasive knee replacement that is completely muscle and tendon sparing.  When patients undergo a SubV Knee there is no cutting of any muscle or tendon.  This allows for less pain and quicker recovery.  It is easier to for patients to obtain full knee range of motion early in the recovery period as the main tendon of the knee has not been violated.  The incision for the SubV knee is more medial (towards the inside part of knee) than a standard total knee replacement incision.  During this procedure Dr Wind will elevate the medial vastus musculature and work underneath the muscle to gain access to the knee as opposed to splitting the quadriceps tendon.  All muscles and tendons are left completely intact.  At the conclusion of surgery the closure is quite efficient and simple since only a small window into the knee has been opened as opposed to opening the entire front of the knee during traditional knee replacement surgery.  The name SubV Knee comes from the anatomic approach.  This approach to knee replacement is known as a Subvastus approach because the exposure is under the vastus musculature.  Hence the name SubV Knee.  Please be on the lookout for the website SubVKnee.com which is currently in production.  On this platform Dr Wind will post detailed content explaining the SubV Knee and showing how this minimally invasive approach is revolutionizing knee replacement surgery.  Dr Wind specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery of both the knee and hip.  He is the highest volume joint replacement surgeon in central Virginia and has worked closely with some of the largest orthopedic implant companies in the world on the design of joint replacement implants.  He performs the vast majority of his joint replacement on an outpatient basis whereby patients have surgery at an outpatient surgery center and go usually within a couple of hours on the same day.  We look forward to speaking with patients who would like to learn more about the advantages of the minimally invasive SubV Knee.
